The professional and personal challenges, the high and lows, the failures and the success?

Startup Weekend is a global grassroots movement of active and empowered entrepreneurs who are learning the basics of founding startups and launching successful ventures. It is the largest community of passionate entrepreneurs with over 1800 past events in 120 countries around the world in 2014.

The non-profit organization is headquartered in Seattle, Washington but Startup Weekend organizers and facilitators can be found in over 200 cities around the world. From Mongolia to South Africa to London to Brazil, people around the globe are coming together for weekend long workshops to pitch ideas, form teams, and start companies.

All Startup Weekend events follow the same basic model: anyone is welcome to pitch their startup idea and receive feedback from their peers. Teams organically form around the top ideas (as determined by popular vote) and then it’s a 54 hour frenzy of business model creation, coding, designing, and market validation. The weekends culminate with presentations in front of local entrepreneurial leaders with another opportunity for critical feedback.

Whether entrepreneurs found companies, find a cofounder, meet someone new, or learn a skill far outside their usual 9-to-5, everyone is guaranteed to leave the event better prepared to navigate the chaotic but fun world of startups. Calen Legaspi

Calen co-founded Orange & Bronze Software Labs to provide a venue where the Filipino engineer’s true skills are showcased. He is currently on his 6th term as part of the board for the Philippine Software Industry Association (PSIA), serving as the Technology Director and head of the Technology Council.

A known champion for education reform, he has initiated and participated in programs that support the Philippine academe: by providing free training and enablement seminars to teachers through the Philippine Society of Information Technology Educators (PSITE), authoring technology training modules for TESDA, as well as contributing to other programs aimed at enhancing the knowledge and skills of IT educators in the Philippines.

Calen is also part of the technical panel of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) where he is instrumental in developing responsive IT education curricula and programs for Philippine universities and institutions. He is part of the CHED team tasked to qualify the standards of IT and Computer Science education in the Philippines.
Prior to O&B, Calen worked as a software engineer in various firms, often in a research and development capacity, as well as doing a stint as a freelance consultant and trainer. He is a graduate of the University of the Philippines, has taken units for a Masters in Computer Science as well as Business Administration in the same university. He is a Sun Certified Enterprise Architect for the J2EE platform, Certified Web Component Developer, and a Certified Java Programmer. He also co-founded PinoyJUG or the Association of Philippine Java Developers and served as the organization's president for six years.

Alvin Gendrano

Alvin is a global software industry veteran with wide-ranging business and technology experiences from P&L ownership, business and operations management, business strategy and execution, development, cloud computing, online gaming, and consumer e-commerce. He also ran a global technical services delivery practice with staff in Shanghai, Bangalore, Egypt, and Europe. He is passionate to help grow local software after 15 years competing in the global software industry.

He is currently Director, Developer and Platform Group for Microsoft Philippines and was recently elected to the Philippine Software Industry Association board. In prior roles, he launched the Xbox Games-on-Demand service, led Business Management for SQLServer, grew an online games marketplace to $300M+/yr, ran global service delivery programs, and is a published author on distributed databases.

Todd Grannis

In 1990 he co-founded one of the first nationwide online services, Public Data Network and subsequently co-created what was then the world’s largest and most popular BBS Chat Networking Software, Chatlink!

He founded visp.net in 1996. The visp.net solution was the first of its kind in the Internet Service Provider business. Today, he is active with other business leaders in the community and openly apply Lean / high-performance business management principals with his team in the management of visp.net operations. This has resulted in some very satisfied customers.

Daisy Tiu

Ms Daisy Tiu, co founded Dataworld Computer Center. Dataworld has been providing high quality enterprise IT solutions and services not only to the major sectors in the Northern Mindanao area but also to selected customers in Southern Mindanao. and the Visayas and Luzon area. Currently, Dataworld is a major partner of Cisco, HP, EMC, Microsoft and other major players in the IT industry .Dataworld also offers Prometric and VUE Testing to students and professionals. She is a member of the board of directors of the CDO ICT council.

Daisy is a graduate of Industrial Engineering of UP Diliman. She handled financial analysis, project evaluation in government and systems analysis in a software development division of an IT firm.

Marvin Consuegra

Marvin Consuegra also known as Marx is currently working as a product designer for San Diego base Software Company called Lightning Web Apps. He is also one of the co-founder and idea maker of PageSnapp (AngelHack 2013 Manila Winner). Marx and his team competed in TechCrunch Disrupt SF Hackathon 2013 and represent the Philippine Team for the AngelHack Silicon Valley Global Demo Day 2013 at San Francisco, CA.

Marx is very passionate about user interface designs and how it affects the behaviour of the users. He is fond of simple, minimalist and organic designs.

Dulce Rose Lada is a Co-Founder, CEO and Creative Head at Crea8tech Solutions, a website design and development studio based in Davao City.

Her passion for building the local startup ecosystem, fostering entrepreneurship and creating invaluable connections in the startup community have led her to organize Startup Weekend Davao, founded the Davao Startup Community, and championed online business success through Google Business Group Davao and TechTalks Davao as Community Managers. She is also an active member of the ICT Davao and a startup advocate at Davao City Chamber of Commerce.

Together with UP Global and other Startup Weekend facilitators, she co-facilitated MEGA SW Malaysia (April 2014) - the biggest Startup Weekend event in Malaysia with 300 participants in 3 verticals! Also, she facilitated SW Davao (August 2013) and SW Cebu (June 2014).
